FRANKENSTEIN WAS AMAZING AND I’M IN A GLASS CASE OF EMOTION
God, it was extraordinary. The set design was phenomenal, the music was amazing, the script was wonderful, Benedict was so heartbreaking as the Creature, and Jonny did a damn fine job of playing Dr. Frankenstein as a totally stressed jerkface. Seriously though, Ben as the Creature…I can’t even begin to explain how amazing he was. All the tics of stroke victims combined with the movements of a newborn, and how his movements get steadier and steadier as the play progresses, his posture more and more upright. So wonderfully done. And the show was so much sadder than I expected…there were a couple of parts where my heart literally felt like it had plummeted into my stomach. The pain caused by abandonment and the folly of man’s attempts to play God…it just had so much raw power. I saw the show with Ivy and Brendan, and when it was over, we literally turned to each other and went “holy shit.” This is definitely a show that will stand out in my mind for a very long time. I’m seeing the reverse casting next week, so it’ll be fun to watch Jonny’s interpretation of the Creature and to see Benedict in all his ginger-haired glory. SO EXCITED
Shallow Fangirl Review:
Benedict Cumberbatch has a fantastic ass, and the camera spent the first ten minutes of the play aimed directly at it while he rolled around stage in nothing but a loincloth. Glory fucking hallelujah.
