Captain, This Entire Planet is Made of Widdly-Wee

A fantastical mix of geekery. Anime, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Star Trek, etc.

I've split up my Tumblr! My much cooler art/fashion/photography blog is now HERE.

Baker Street Irregulars’ Tiffin
One of the most enduring and endearing parts of the Sherlock Holmes stories are the Baker Street Irregulars: the gang of ruffian children Holmes employed for shillings and biscuits (probably). This crunchy, chocolatey, oh-so-calorific tiffin is just the thing to have on hand as a grab-and-go treat for your own Irregular crowd - your kids, siblings, friends and of course yourself! It’s super easy to make, and a perfect way to let children get their hands sticky in the kitchen - nothing’s too precise, so it’s easy to switch in your favourite ingredients and there’s no actual baking involved.
Ingredients
150g unsalted butter
2 tablespoons sugar (any)
2 tablespoons golden syrup
6 teaspoons cocoa
200g digestive biscuits
Pick-and-mix your own selection for the rest - a few of handfuls of fruits and nuts, whatever you fancy. I used raisins and peanuts, but you could try combinations of hazelnuts, pecans, glace cherries, sultanas, dried apricots - or marshmallows, honeycomb pieces, M&Ms… just about anything goes.
250g plain or milk chocolate
Line a pan with cling film, foil or greaseproof paper. Size isn’t too important - if it’s bigger just use one end, smaller gets you thicker slices!
In a saucepan, melt and combine the butter, sugar, syrup and cocoa. When it’s completely liquid, crumble the biscuits into small chunks with your hands above the mix, and let them fall straight in. Then throw in the fruit and nuts, and stir together until everything is coated in chocolatey mixture and evenly distributed.
Pour into the tin and press down with a spatula so it forms a thick, even layer.
Melt the chocolate, either by zapping it in the microwave and giving it a stir every fifteen seconds or so, or in a double boiler. Then pour it over the crunchy layer, smoothing with a knife or fork.
Leave it in the fridge for a few hours to set, then cut into squares or bars with a sharp knife.

Ivy, these are easily made gluten-free! We should bake some!! :D
